Well my friends, this is what 14 inches of snow looks like out of Julie's Open Window. Not much but a vast wasteland of white. As many of you know, if you have been following me since the fall, our wonderful city tore out all of our existing tree lines and shrubs to make way for the 'road to nowhere' (click here to really get emotionally attached). Last year at this time, this would have been such a lovely scene with the church just in the background, but those days, as they say, are gone. Sad....yes I am. I have found myself feeling a number of emotions that I never thought I would attach to the scene in my own backyard.
But there they were, rearing their heads all day long.

This is one scene that hasen't changed. The tiny view which comes with 14" of snow from the front door of our condo. The winds were whipping around over 30 mph last night and this morning,
so my poor holiday flag just gave up.

I have lived all my life, with the exception of a few months here and way over there, in Northern Illinois. I always thought that I would be sad if I couldn't spend this time of year right here with the snow and yes, the cold. But I have to say, after a day like today, I am seriously re-thinking that idea!
So here is what I want to know from you.....
What have you given up by moving from your roots that you never thought you would miss, but now you reeeaally do?

Wow, Julie! That's a TON of snow! Winter wonderland, indeed--but your trees would have made for a much more magical scene--you're right!
I grew up in Ohio, and I really miss the seasons, but I have to say, on a cold day like this--without snow--that at least it's nice to be able to drive around without worrying about sliding! So I miss it, but....!

I love snow but am not sure I could cope with 14 inches of it! I moved from Lodon right in the city 25 years ago to a small country town, and often wish I could go back to the bright lights of the city...then I think of the traffic, and the noise, and the crowds....and think I like where I am :)

That's is a heck of a lot of snow!! I've been to our snow fields before - and there is really much more than that to say - but have never really been in 'true snow country' before. Mind you, winter is my favourite season - I'm not a fan of summer at all, ugh!!
I moved from a small country town to the bright lights of Sydney 17years ago and, whilst the city life is where I need to be right now, I really miss the country. I've never adjusted to the crowds - hate shopping when 'normal' people shop and love it when I can escape for a day or a weekend into the country and breathe in the fresh air and look for miles and miles without interruption.

There's just something sooooo beautiful about trees laden with snow; especially Narnia-like ones so glad you've got some on your blog at least. I guess the hardest thing is that the trees have been taken away whereas if you'd moved to the condo this winter you'd never have known that view. I'd be really sad too!
I've never really uprooted. We live in the same area both Malc and I grew up in and our children have been/go to the same schools I did. Our families are all within a mile and I love that. Our siblings all moved away but came back; we never really went anywhere (except to Liverpool to Uni)!!
Well, since I live in the house I grew up in, this is a hard question for me to answer! lol We have discussed moving to NY though and I would miss the wide open spaces that we have here I think. I do wish we got snow like yours though!
Hi Julie, I'm still sad for you about 'that road', and can see why you are thinking of moving on.
My biggest worry about moving away was about my family. I moved abroad for 8 years and at first I was terribly homesick. I found I did write to my family which I hadn't before and you can say so much more in a letter to someone than you would if you saw them everyday.
When we came back to the UK my OH's contract was in the north of England, in Yorkshire, and while I had a yearning to be back around my family in the south, I just love it in the Yorkshire Dales and wouldn't want to go back down south now.
The times I do visit family are really special times now with great memories each time as I think we all make the extra effort to make it a special time, whereas if I lived next door to them, as I did at one point, daily life makes it feel different, hard to explain, but I know I get really excited with the antipation of seeing them, and you do get used to being a distance away.
At the end of the day I am glad I took on the challenge of trying somewhere new, and have no regrets, plus my family were happy to visit me, which made it exciting for them too!!
Perhaps you don't have to go too far away?
Try not to let that view get you down.

It looks like what you got was wetter than ours. We got pure powder.
I have lived in 11 different states, from California to Maine, South Carolina, to Texas and everywhere in between. My father was in the Navy. I am myself, a little sick of the snow. I love to look at it when it first falls, but what we got was bad. Warm is sounding alot nicer right now.
Hi Julie! It is sad about the road to no where! We moved from sunny Florida, where I had lived all my life, to Kentucky! I cried for the first month. Then I had a long talk with myself! Long story, short! I love Louisville now! We are retired and have no desire to go anywhere else! Don't know if you will be leaving children or grandchildren! That would be tough! I would not want to deal with all that snow! What ever you decide, I wish you all the best! Hugs, Fran!
Hi Sweetie! I know your sad, and you miss all your beautiful trees, but still, it's beautiful! All you snow is beautiful!!! I wish I could just run out there and make a big happy snowman!...My roots are planted firmly here on Long Island. I could never leave my family which is also here, but if I had to move, it would be somewhere where there is a longer winter, and more snow! Hugs, xoxo

So sorry you last your trees, progress is sometimes not all it's cracked up to be, especially when it's ruining your beautiful view. We planted fast growing Maples and Pines when we bought our home and they grew quite fast. Even if you don't stay to enjoy their maturity someone else will. ~Diane
Bbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.......... oh that looks so cold!! If it makes you feel any better I'm sitting inside at the moment... melting!! It's around 44° celcius today, hot winds causing dust storms and making it unbearable outside!
